I don’t think he realized how “revealing” his song would be

Matthew West is an award-winning music artist who just released a song that he describes as “silly” and “lighthearted.”

To others like myself, however, it speaks volumes about the dark side of conservative purity culture.

The little ditty is called “Modest is Hottest,” and it is quite cringe.

Let’s unpack why…

Verse 1

Dear daughter, it’s me, your father
I think it’s time we had a talk
The boys are coming ‘round ’cause you’re beautiful
And it’s all your mother’s fault
And I’ve been trying hard to raise you up right
No drinking, no smoking, no swearing
But your old man’s got a little more advice
When it comes to the clothes that you’re wearing

West foreshadows problematic verses to come by defining his daughters’ virtues in superficial terms.

Note here that the only reason he credits for why “the boys are coming ‘round” is that his girls are genetically “beautiful” — as if a woman’s physical appearance is all that determines how attractive she is to men. Now, did he mean to suggest that personality and character are inconsequential in this case? Likely not, but the omission…
