I just want to emphasize that, beyond our individual prejudices, my point was to specifically highlight the ways each of us perpetuate or fail to challenge systemic racism, whether intentionally or unintentionally.
Individual prejudice is different from systemic racism, which denotes a power structure comprised of social laws, policies, practices, attitudes, and beliefs that result in cyclically oppressive treatment toward a subjugated racial group. In the United States, that group is Black and non-white people. The behaviors and beliefs born by systemic racism are what I wanted to draw attention to, because those prejudices have the most power to inflict harm in today’s society.
